1B.   Advanced Topics: Integrating Academics and Technology into Your          Career Choices Coursework

Course Description
  Using the technology and academic integration strategies of the Career Choices curriculum, participants will develop an interdisciplinary course around the theme of career and life planning. In addition, they’ll learn about sophisticated advisory strategies that include the use of career portfolios and an online 10-year plan that is available to instructors, advisors, and parents throughout a student’s tenure in high school.

Course Objectives/Goals
  The learner will gain:
  • An in-depth review of each of the academic and internet enhancements available with the Career Choices curriculum
  • Strategies for creating buy-in for and implementing a Freshman Transition course and school-wide initiative using Career Choices
  • An understanding of how to integrate the themes of the Career Choices curriculum into an academic course
  • Techniques for developing Career Portfolios, in both notebook and online formats
  • An understanding of how to incorporate an online career exploration tool into the Career Choices curriculum
  • Strategies for upgrading all counseling and advisory functions throughout a student’s four years in high school using My10yearPlan.com
Units Granted:  1 Unit = 15 hours
 

Number of Contact Hours

     • 1 hour (phone interview; rubric/form provided)
 

Number of Online Hours

     • 9 hours (18 online training modules)
  Number of Practicum Hours
    • 6 hours
    • Each participant creates a customized lesson plan for a one-year course (180
    hours) beginning with a 90-hour lesson plan found on The Teachers’ Lounge. The
    task is to incorporate both academic and technology enhancements.

Methods of Evaluating Student Performance

  • Each online module has a required five-question assessment that must be completed with 100 percent accuracy
  • Completion of the project-based learning assignments, as noted above
