Using the Career Choices materials as a curriculum that meets the Course Standards for Freshman Transition Classes, the learner will explore the key strategies for keeping students in school and succeeding. Participants will learn about proven methods for helping all students create meaningful 10-year career and education plans. In the workshop, as well as online, they’ll explore the various components that compose a well-executed course that can dramatically change students’ attitudes about the value of education. |
Course Objectives/Goals
- Proven methods for implementing and creating meaningful 10-year career and life plans utilizing technology and goal-planning strategies for students in their schools
- Strategies for initiating a Freshman Transition course/curriculum plan within a school community targeting 8th- or 9th-grade students
- The necessary data and resources to generate buy-in for the course from teachers, parents, school board members, and community partners
- Techniques and tools for integrating academics, technology, and career/life planning into the concept of school-wide comprehensive guidance
- Assisting students in their schools to recognize the value of education. The course provides lesson plans that educators can use in teaching students about the importance of staying in school and helping students understand what staying in school will mean to their future happiness

- What does research tell us about dropout prevention?
- What makes the age of 13 and 14 a critical time for dropout prevention efforts, not only for impacting high school attrition rates, but also college completion and life satisfaction
- What is classroom-based comprehensive guidance and why is it successful in dropout prevention efforts?
- What are the ingredients for a successful Freshman Transition course for 8th or 9th graders
- The 10-year Plan: How to help all students develop a meaningful and motivating vision of their future
- Personalizing education: How the Career Choices curriculum can be used in a variety of course structures to address myriad issues
Methods of Evaluating Student Performance
- Attendance at the three-day institute (sign-in and sign-out sheets)
- Each online module has a required five-question assessment that must be completed with 100 percent accuracy
- Completion of the project-based learning assignments, as noted above
