  Classroom Strategies for Implementing a Freshman Transition Course in the 8th or 9th Grade: Using the Career Choices Curriculum and Online Enhancements

Course Description
  This is an implementation workshop for instructors who are or will be teaching the Career Choices course. Participants will be provided with an overview of the course, including proven methods for initiating an experience that culminates with each student creating personalized 10-year career and education plans.

Course Objectives/Goals
  This course provides more than just theory, imparting practical and proven solutions for the classroom instructor. Participants will gain:
  • Proven methods for helping students create 10-year career and life plans
  • Strategies for initiating a Freshman Transition course in the 8th or 9th grade
  • Curriculum that engages students in motivational, relevant academics
  • Techniques and tools for integrating academics, technology, and career/life planning
  • Tools and strategies to:
    • Dramatically change students’ attitudes about learning
    • Help students envision—and plan for—self-sufficient adulthood
    • Increase academic achievement and reduce dropout rates (high school and college)

Course Outline
  The learner experiences the complete Career Choices curriculum (textbooks and online enhancements), along with the various academic and technology options. The carefully planned scope and sequence of the curriculum facilitates a decision-making process (Who Am I: Chapters 1-2; What Do I Want: Chapters 3-7; How Do I Get It? Chapters 8-12) that, by the end of the course, enables students to write a meaningful 10-year career and education plan.

  • Overview of the Career Choices curriculum (texts and academic/technology enhancements)
  • Integrating career exploration into the English classroom
  • The key to success for dropout prevention programs
  • Five ingredients of a successful Career Choices course
  • The School-wide Initiative
  • Every teacher an advisor: Strategies for personalization
  • Integrating academics and technology
  • Tips for getting buy-in from all stakeholders
  • Section Four of the Instructor’s Guide
  • Customizing lesson plans using Microsoft Excel
  • Creating an involved learner
  • Strategies for active learning
  • Cooperative learning and team building
  • Strategies for incorporating an online career exploration tool
  • The career portfolio (both notebook and online formats)
  • How to use the pre- and post-surveys to assess Career Choices’ impact
  • Chapter 12: The take-home final exam option

Methods of Evaluating Student Performance

  • Attendance at the three-day institute (sign-in and sign-out sheets)
  • Each online module has a required five-question assessment that must be completed with 100 percent accuracy
  • Completion of the project-based learning assignments, as noted above
