An 8th- or 9th-grade class based on the Course Standards for Freshman Transition Classes can reduce high school and college dropout rates as well as increase motivation and academic achievement. Using the Career Choices curriculum, participants will be exposed to a variety of topics and proven strategies they’ll want to incorporate into their plans for redesigning their secondary schools. |

- The key to dropout prevention programs that work
- Strategies for a student-centered, active-learning classroom that facilitates the development of a 10-year education and career plan
- Why classroom-based comprehensive guidance is needed and how Career Choices can help provide a life-changing experience for students
- The textbook and internet enhancements that make up the Career Choices curriculum
- A solid understanding of the scope and sequence of the curriculum and why this is important
- How to integrate career and life planning into an academic class such as English/Language arts
- The pedagogy behind that Career Choices curriculum so they can customize lesson plans to meet their program goals
- An in-depth review of each of the academic and internet enhancements available with the Career Choices curriculum
- Strategies for creating buy-in for and implementing a Freshman Transition course and school-wide initiative using Career Choices
- An understanding of how to integrate the themes of the Career Choices curriculum into an academic course
- Techniques for developing Career Portfolios online
- How to incorporate an online career exploration tool into the Career Choices curriculum
- Strategies for upgrading all counseling and advisory functions throughout a student’s four years in high school using My10yearPlan.com®
- How to recruit and train the School Site Executive for My10yearPlan.com®, including an overview of their role
- How to use the online option for the pre- and post-course survey for assessing the impact of Career Choices course
- How to use The Teachers’ Lounge to provide capacity-building for staff
Methods of Evaluating Student Performance
- Each online video has a required five-question assessment that must be completed with 100 percent accuracy
- Completion of the project-based learning assignments, as noted above
